Durty News

So it has been another 3 weeks since I have posted, but hopefully that will change now. It is kind off a terrible time to write about sports at least from my perspective. Here are the reasons.

1) The Bulls got bounced by the Celtics
2) There are no Illinois sports that I want to follow right now.
3) Illinois recruiting is slow because in basketball the 2009 and 2010 classes are full and in Football we only have anywhere from 15-18 scholarships available.
4) Everyone in the NL Central has been in the lead, so getting worked up over every game will most likely kill me.
5) Bags has yet to become a spectator sport so I am still toiling away in obscurity until I can turn pro.

Now to top it all of, every show I watch has had their season finale, Entourage doesn't start until August, and as much as I keep praying for it, the Soprano's isn't coming back. There has been some news on the Illini front though.

Even though their isn't any football or basketball that doesn't mean that our Illini aren't staying out of the news. Of course it isn't for anything good. Mike Garrity who is an Illini offensive lineman that has never sniffed the field decided to take out his aggression on a kid half his size and his been charged with felony assault.

Garrity arrested for fight at Kam's

You gotta love that his girlfriend made up a story of the 150 pound kid punching Garrity first, and then Garrity still showed restraint before fracturing the kids skull. If she stays with him after his prison sentence then he should definitely propose to that chick. After watching this story for the past few days I have realized that there are 2 types of sports fans. The first type of fan is one who, when he hears a story like this, takes the players side. The second obviously takes the victims side. This obviously shouldn't occur because we should always wait to get all of the facts before we make a decision, but we all make snap judgements.

In a situation like this, I am starting to side with the victims in the situation. No matter how bad the player or the team is, on a college campus these guys are still revered. Also a person, no matter how drunk they are would still have to be out of their mind to pick a fight with an offensive lineman. Even the god damn punters on the team are above average size. I understand that situations like these are always gonna happen, but at the same with the amount of coverage that sports get now, if you leave the toilet seat up, it is gonna be on the Internet before you are out of the bathroom. The one aspect that people seem to overlook is that with every athlete being under an even larger microscope, they are actually being held accountable for their actions. No longer are we in awe of athletes because of the money they make and their accomplishments on the field.

How many of you remember this commercial:

The entire sports nation was screaming for Barkley's head after this commercial came out. Chuck was just ahead of his time. He knew that if people actually saw athletes on a daily basis they would be sickened by their actions, well now with the blogs about everything, people get to see behind the curtain. I think in general this is a good thing for our society, because we can get stop putting athletes on a pedestal and at the same time, athletes can start living normal lives because we will stop caring so damn much.

I went to Wrigley for the first time this year, just in time to watch the Cubs lose their 8th straight game. For the first time in my life I did not have a beer at the game. Being sober at a game only lead to one revelation: Cubs fans suck!! 70% of the people there are wasted and only pay attention to the field when they are screaming at an outfielder to throw them a ball. 20% of the people there aren't watching the game, instead they are discussing what color granite they are putting into their bathroom. The final 10% actually care about the game, but they are hard to find because of all of the other assholes at the game. I'm afraid by the time I have kids the only time I can take them to a game is a Wednesday day game against the Nationals...... that is if the Nationals are still around at that time. The highlights of the game were Mr. T doing the 7th inning stretch, and spending 5 minutes trying to figure out why a Sarah McLachlan song was played in between innings?

The NBA playoffs have been fantastic, and that is about to end soon because it looks like the Cavs are done, and Denver wants it a lot more than LA. Watching these playoffs has rejuvenated me, for the simple reason that 5 years ago could you have predicted that a trade of Allen Iverson for Chauncey Billups would have would have helped the team getting Billups! Also if I told you that the Denver Nuggets would lead the league in neck tattoos would you have believed me? The bar that is hosting the Nuggets players championship party is installing metal detectors and bulletproof glass as we speak. I love when sports throws you a curve ball, also the NBA is just like it was in the 90's. There are no easy buckets, and the intensity is back, thank god!

I just heard one of the best lines on Sportscenter in a long time. "Top 4, Carl Crawford has been stealing like he is an investment banker." Crawford is 30 for 30 in stolen bases this year, and that line was classic.

And finally one of the greatest video games of all time is making a comeback on Nintendo Wii. Enjoy:
