Beer Monster Spotted In Champaign

For those of you who are not aware of the Beer Monster, allow us here at Durty Butter to enlighten you. First a few rules.
(Beware these are Oakdale Rules. The Original Tegal Rules May Differ)

1) Do not partake in a Beer Monster if you are feint of heart.

2) The Shirt must be over the head for the entire beer, otherwise the Beer Monster is not official.

3) You may not slap anyone in the stomach while they are performing the Beer Monster.

4) If you are in the presence of a Beer Monster, then you must cease you conversation, stop dancing, quit watching TV, and pay respect to the Beer Monster.

5) You may not change shirts after the Beer Monster is finished.

6) The thicker the shirt, the more impressive the Beer Monster.

7) Female Beer Monsters are extremely rare, like Loch-Ness monster, Bigfoot, Yeti rare. So if you are lucky enough to witness one, for the love of everything that is holy in this world, TAKE A PICTURE!!!

8) If you are wearing 2 shirts then you have the option of using only one, but beware, this will mean that you will get 1/2 the credit, and are 1/2 the man.

9) The Beer Monster is not only an acceptable form of celebration, it is the highest level of celebration, so feel free to perform the Beer Monster at Birthdays, Graduations, Christenings, Thanksgiving Dinner, Weddings, Anniversaries, Hospital waiting rooms during childbirth. In fact, the Beer Monster should replace cigars when a child is born.

10) The cooler you are, the cooler the Beer Monster. If you are a Dooosh, than you are gonna do a doooshy Beer Monster. DOOOOSSHH!!

So if you are partaking in a Beer Monster please feel free to send pictures to Durtybutter@gmail.com and we will post them, if they are deemed worthy by King, BT, J Danny, Rod and Chol.

Dufrene takes leave from Illinois

Ron Zook said today after practice that Daniel Dufrene, the starting running back for Illinois has taken a leave of absence from the team. Zook did not say why or for how long, all he said was that it was for "personal problems" and that playing against Iowa is "up to him". Being a fan of Illinois sports just keeps getting better and better.

It was reported on Illini HQ and Zook also mentioned it his radio show.

Weekend Picks (Wannie vs Front-Butt edition)

Welcome back to Durty Butter's Weekend Picks! Lastweek I went 4-1, which means that this week I am most likely going to get my ass kicked. It doesn't really matter, I already cashed out my winnings, now I just have to wait the 40 business days that apparently is the industry standard to get my money. So before we get to this weeks picks, lets recap last week, so we can all discuss how amazing I am. Then we can get fired up about Wannie vs. Front Butt!!

First we will start with the only wrong pick I had, Illinois. Shoulda, coulda, woulda, Illinois shit the bed big time here. I already did a recap, and basically it was penalties, and turnovers inside our redzone. Hopefully they put it all together this week against Iowa.

Boise State wins easily for us last week. You know that San Jose State would not beat BSU, and the spread just wasn't big enough. Vegas figured this out, which is why they are 21 point favorites on the road. This still might not be big enough, since New Mexico State is god awful, but either way BSU is now getting Vegas respect.

Penn State's offense was not clicking like they normally do, but give credit to OSU for that. The difference in the game was one thing. PSU had no turnovers and no penalties. Pryor did look good throwing the ball, but OSU couldn't run. Durty Butter wins

Texas Tech is a sick offense. In the first quarter this game looked like it was going to be a shoot out as it was tied 14-14, then Tech scored 42 unanswered points. The defense gets a lot of help because opposing offenses have to score damn near everytime they touch the ball. We covered this spread by 42 points.

Minnesota's defense is just awesome. Not because they stop teams and have shut down players, but because they constantly create turnovers. They still have the best turnover margin in College Football, and they hold teams to field goals.

So last week we went 4-1 so for the season now we are 17-13

Illinois (-3) vs. Iowa - I hate Iowa, and I am not jumping off the Illinois bandwagon. We have only been outplayed in 2 games, that was Mizzou and Penn State. Minnesota and Wisconsin were games that we gave away with turnovers and penalties. Shonn Green does scare me, but the rest of Iowa's offense doesn't. Iowa has the number 3 defense in the Big Ten, but that is against NW, MSU, Indiana, and Wisconsin. Two of those were loses. This game pretty much determines Illinois season. If we come out and play like we can, than we can resurrect this season and play for a better bowl game. If we lose, than that Northwestern game will decide if we go to Detroit or stay home for Christmas. Plus we lost a huge game in Iowa last year, so we will be looking for payback, and if Illinois needed any more motivation, read this article. I'm sure the Illini have. (you are going to have to copy and paste links for the time being)

http://media.www.dailyiowan.com/media/storage/paper599/news/2008/10/29/Sports/Commentary.Zook.No.Ferentz-3512871.shtml

Texas (-4) @ Texas Tech - Texas has played a brutal schedule, and it is almost over. They have stopped awesome offenses in Oklahoma and Mizzou, while no one has been able to stop them. Texas Tech will finally play someone who can put up points just like they can, and they are playing a defense that can stop them. Texas wins this and they are guaranteed a BCS game, and can coast until they play Mizzou for the Big 12 Title. This game being at Texas Tech might help, but there will be enough Texas fans there to make it seem like a neutral site game like Oklahoma was.

Pitt (+5) @ Notre Dame - Notre Dame has been playing better since they have gone no-huddle more, but the Fighting Wannies have been really good against the pass except for last week. Notre Dame can get as much confidence as possible playing the likes of Washington, Stanford, and San Diego State, but when push comes to shove, I still don't think they can beat teams that are the caliber of say non-bottom feeders of the FBS. I hate Front-Butt, and Clausen, and again I am gonna ride Wannie until he bucks me off.

Utah (-7.5) @ New Mexico - I'm not really sure why this spread is so close, Utah is 8-0 and ranked #10, New Mexico is 4-5 and only has one good win against Arizona. Utah is pretty legit as far as a non major conference team goes, and New Mexico is pretty average as far a non major conference team goes. Plus to actually get into a BCS game, or a National Championship game, Utah needs to impress voters, winning by only a touchdown at New Mexico will not accomplish this. The win at Michigan for Utah doesn't mean nearly as much as did week one, so look for Utah to crush people.

Florida (-6) vs Georgia - I can't wait for this game. I'm sure that all of you remember what happened last year after Georgia scored its first touchdown. It has been all over sportscenter, but if you haven't seen it here it is.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xj_yqJtmE2w

That was probably the most appalling thing that I have seen that a coach not only condoned, but planned himself. It worked for Mark Richt last year, but it is gonna have repercussions for years. Urban Meyer is gonna run up the score on Georgia every year he plays them until Richt is gone. Look for every starter on Florida to be on the field until the final whistle blows, Meyer is still probably gonna have his team lined up during the post game press conference. Florida is playing great coming in to this game, Georgia is scoring points, but also giving up points. They are going to get punched in the mouth early, and then when they are on the ground Florida is gonna keep punching them until Georgia is buried in the ground.

Great football games this weekend, I am just hoping that Illinois shows up, and that I don't have another debacle the week after I went 4-1. Everybody cheer for Wannie, and for delusional Iowa fans to remember their place, as a fall back school for people that don't get into Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, or Michigan

Bulls in First Place!!!

Today has been what one might call a "wonderful day." I woke up this morning to a phone call which resulted in my first post law school employment. Now, considering the slight employment issue that I've encountered, one might think that the aforementioned phone call would in and of itself guarantee a pretty great day, and it did, but little did I know that my day would only improve from there. Later in the evening, while actually searching the local comcast channel guide to find the listing for the opening Bulls game, I found out at 6:45 that I had an opportunity to attend said Bulls game, but no, it wasn't just an opportunity to attend the Bulls home opener, it was an opportunity to attend COURTSIDE, and no, not only COURTSIDE, but directly behind the Loveabulls. So, I did, and I couldn't be happier to have been there.
Which brings me to the game... the Bulls looked GREAT in the opener, and after watching this team (I realize it's only been one game), as opposed to last year's team, I'm pretty confident that the Bulls could end up being the surprise of the Eastern Conference, and here's why...
DERRICK ROSE
It's amazing how different a team can look when a true point guard runs the offense (and NO Chris Duhon does not qualify as a true point guard). Not only did Rose handle the ball well and dish through passing lanes that I didn't think existed, his first step is quick enough to draw a defender, which left others wide open throughout the course of the game. Oh, and he can finish in the paint. Kudos to Paxson and the Bulls brass for pulling the trigger on the young Chicagoan and passing on the headache that will be Michael Beasley.
It also didn't hurt that Rose set both Deng and Thomas up for some ridiculous alley-oops and open Bunny's. Can't help but be excited about an 11 point, 9 assist, 4 rebound, 3 steal NBA debut.
BEN GORDAN - 6TH MAN OF THE YEAR
As any Bulls fan the last few years knows, Ben Gordan has always played better when coming off the bench, and tonight was no exception. He's maybe 6'1" and couldn't guard Coach Vinny if his life depended on it, but when he faces the opposition's third or fourth guards on the depth chart, he makes them look silly. Now that Rose, Hughes (when healthy), and Hinrich will amass the majority of the starting minutes, it leaves Gordan to the 6th man roll that he will flourish in. Tonight he came off the bench for some instant offense and delivered with 18 points, including 3-6 shooting from beyond the arc, in about 26 minutes.
All in all, congrats to the Bulls on the big win tonight, it had to feel extra special winning with good D and a great opening night offense against the old general Scott Skiles. There will be more Bulls correspondence to come, but rest assured that even if the Bulls happen to struggle this year, this team will be exciting to watch, and we may be watching the emergence of the next great NBA point guard in #1 Derrick Rose, even if it's hard to swallow that he didn't get his undergraduate "education" as an Illini.

Durty Butter Updates

Again here is some great news, the Big Ten Network has signed one of the best play by play guys in the history of sports telecasts! This hire automatically tripled the viewers of the Indiana-Northwestern game from 62 to 186, and I will be one of those viewers! Who is it? It is none other than Gus Johnson! Expect at least 10 buzzer beaters this season in Big Ten play, I think it is in Gus' contract that games have to be close in order for him to do them.

Illini HQ football chat (We sent in the question about the punt return)

http://www.illinihq.com/chats/2008/10/28/illinois_football_chat__pm_tuesday

So after reading this chat, I have a question, when did it become completely acceptable for an entire fanbase to want a coach fired or hired on a game by game basis? Since I started school at Illinois in 1999, we are 45-61, including only winning 13 games since we made the Sugar Bowl in 2001. Now we actually have talent and a solid coaching staff and everyone wants us to be USC overnight. How about you appreciate what you have and shut the hell up!! To actually have the coaching staff that we have at Illinois now is pretty amazing considering Illinois Football is not the most sought after job in the NCAA. We are now consistently pulling in top 25 recruiting classes, which should mean top 25 teams, unless you are Notre Dame. Do you really think that after what Zook did taking us to the Rose Bowl last year, and the amazing job him and Locks do recruiting that other higher profile schools haven't called?
The people that are calling for Locksley to be fired as offensive coordinator are @$#%ing stupid. Did Juice progress from a option QB who couldn't read defenses with a completion percentage lower than Rex Grossman throwing left handed on his own? And Locks probably doesn't to throw to Rejus anymore on purpose even though he is one of the most dynamic WR's in the NCAA. Here is the secret to why Rejus doesn't get the ball on every play, when we are on offense, there is a defense on the other side of the ball. I'm pretty sure that the number one thing that opposing Defensive Coordinators are trying to stop is Rejus. They also have irrational fanbases that they have to appease also. Sorry that the NCAA doesn't revolve around Illinois football.
Juice has 18 TD passes and only 3 are to Rejus, because OTHER PEOPLE ARE OPEN!! Illinois has Benn play every down as receiver, return punts, return kicks, line-up in the backfield, catch bubble screens. What the &$*# else do you want? People say that Juice doesn't go through his progressions and zeros in on one receiver, if he really does that then why has he completed passes to 14 different receivers, and have 8 different people with TD receptions? This argument needs to stop, and people who don't understand football need to shut the hell up!! These are the same morons who think that the Bears should just direct snap to Devin Hester, and thought that Caleb Hannie should get a chance to start at QB after 2 good quarters in preseason against people who are now selling cars. If we win 2 more games, then Ron Zook has accomplished something that hasn't happened at Illinois since 1991-1992, that is go to consecutive Bowl Games.

Finally a good article about how Illinois is handling the lose and Zook getting upset. John Supinie is probably the best Illini reporter since he actually gives you quotes from players and coaches. He gives you good info and not just stupid rants that are meant to ignite the masses and gain readership. That is our job.

Everybody Cross Your Fingers!

The Chicago Tribune just got me all happy inside by mentioning a possible deal that would include Kosuke Fukudome driving another fan base crazy by closing his eyes and swinging as hard as he can at pitches that are in the right handed batters box! See this is why Indians believe in Karma, because when something shitty happens that makes you feel sad (Illini this weekend) god gives you something that brings a smile to your face (Fukudome anywhere else) Here is the link to the Tribune:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-28-cubs-chicagooct28,0,3862314.story

For what it's worth, I really only want Peavy out of that list, maybe Dunn, because it would be nice to have a 3 hitter who has power. Also I think I would trade Dunn's strikeouts for Derrek Lee's double plays. Although when you lose Lee, then you also add 10 errors to Aramis.

Here is another Tribune article that deals with the White Sox and what they may be looking to do in the off season. I think that Chone Figgins batting lead off for this team would be amazing, and you would still have a great infield. I will let Sox fans actually tell me whether or not they want this, since I told a couple Sox fans that I thought Nick Swisher seemed like a cool dude, and they almost shot me.

Dee Brown Update

Here is another great article about Dee Brown. It looks like he is making a good impression with his teammates and coaches. If anyone has heard his album please drop a message and tell us how it is. It can't be any worse than Brandon Lloyd's album right?

http://www.nba.com/wizards/news/brown_081027.html

And also it looks like Jamar Smith will be an All-American this year..... In Division-II. In all seriousness, we at Durty Butter would like to wish Jamar the best of luck and hopefully he does well both athletically and academically.

Zook is Pissed

Illini fans are pissed, Zooks pissed, Durty Butter is Pissed, Big Bear is pissed, Yerk is pissed, The Rack is pissed. It has been a rough season so far, but I think it has finally wore down the Zooker. Here is an article with him pretty much blowing up the entire team, but Juice in particular.

http://www.sj-r.com/college/x1157498549/Zook-Juice-needs-to-think-about-his-next-game-not-NFL

And here is a little side note from Illini HQ about how Zook cut his Media Session short after getting upset. Not sure if this is a good thing, or this means that the wheels are about to fall of. I personally hope that this will create some sort of fire under the Illini. I am picking the Illini to beat Iowa, just because they respond well when they are coming off a loss, just don't expect much in the Ohio State game, because Illinois is terrible after a win.

Vontae Davis is sitting pretty

Todd McShay has come out with a new mini-mock draft, and he has Vontae Davis being selected 5th overall by the San Francisco 49ers. This would mean that Vontae would join his brother Vernon who was drafted by the 49ers to play TE with the 6th overall pick in 2006. Although, Vernon was told to leave the field yesterday by "The Samurai". Singletary was pretty pissed, but apparently everything is cool between them.

You can see McShay's mock draft on the left of the page under Illinois' Football Scoreboard. Or just click below, but you need to be an ESPN insider

http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft09/insider/columns/story?columnist=mcshay_todd&id=3660749

Here in Mike going off in his press conference:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EB5-yJM3vJc

For the record, Vernon made a catch, and then got an unsportsmanlike penalty for taunting. Mike didn't like it too much. Here is an article from today.

What Went Wrong?

Last year the Illini made the Rose Bowl and everyone couldn't wait for the 2008 season. Now it seems that we can't wait for basketball season. Now I will be the first to tell you not to jump off the bandwagon, but that is because I am moron when it comes to going down with the ship. Here are reasons why we lost, and you can decide if they are fixable, or if you think we are screwed, and you want to jump. At least Detroit looks pretty in this picture.

1) Lets start with the first play, the kickoff. We actually had a decent kick to the 3 yard line, and it only took the Illini 3 kickers to find one who can manage this seemingly impossible feat. Then of course you have Dustin Jefferson run right by the return man, he was untouched and all he had to do was break down, but I think he was hoping the return man would jump into him. This leads to a 35 yard return.

2) Donsay Hardemann was in on the first 4 tackles of the game. The reason that this is bad is because the first 4 plays of the game were running plays. Martez was picking wrong gaps again.

3) Secondary gets hands on balls, but can't pick them off, but we do get a fumble. Now for the offense. Britt Miller drops an interception at the end of the half that would have been a touchdown. Last Year we made big plays like these, this year we are a step behind.

4) We can't stop turning the ball over! Juice's first pick was probably the worst throw of his career, and he was god awful as a freshman. This gives Wisco great field position and they get a field goal. Then when we get the ball back, first we screw up the kickoff. When the ball is at your feet on the one yard line, just let it go out of bounds or through the end zone. When we do get out of shitty field position, we lose a first down because of Xavier Fulton not being on the line, then we get a false start on Xavier, and we have 3rd and 20. We punt. How many times has this team shot itself in the foot with penalties when we are starting to drive. It happened early against Louisiana, Minnesota, and Wisco. We don't get into a rhythm at all, and play like shit all day on offense. We are the most penalized team in the Big Ten, and most of them are holds, illegal motion, or illegal formation. Maybe we shouldn't have played 14 true freshman this year.

5) Have I mentioned special teams yet? Benn decides to channel Devin Hester and dance around after catching a punt just long enough for Dustin Jefferson to get a block in that back at our own 14 yard line. So we get to start at our own 7. We do score on a great drive. Shocking that we can score when we don't have any penalties.

6) I know that Jeff Cumberland is huge, and really fast, but does it really matter if he can't catch the ball? Cumberland, Sykes, DuValt, and Judsen all drop balls, unfortunately they usually do it on 3rd down.

7) Wisconsin gets a gift with the refs giving them a reception which creates 3rd and 1 instead of 3rd and 9, and then their QB runs in untouched from 15 yards away. Wisconsin's 2 scores come from field position in Illinois territory.

8) Rejus gives us a great return to Wisconsin's 30. Then Jeff Allen holds to cause 2nd and 17, and then another formation penalty on 3rd down negates a first down pass to Rejus to the 13. First and 10 at the 13 or 3rd and 12 from the 30, the mistakes are adding up, yet we still end up tied.

9) What the fuck is the point of having Benn only 20 yards deep on punt returns at the end of the half? Seriously somebody tell me what the logic is here. Either you bring all 11, or you bring 10 and have Benn deep. What could he possibly accomplish 20 yards deep?

10) I really have no reason to blame Pam Ward, but for some reason I really hate listening to her do football games. I really can't come up with a good reason to hate her, because in 2 games that I have listened to her, she hasn't made mistakes and really knows her shit. I guess I would much rather listen to her rather than Paul McGwire, but I have to blame somebody.

Too be honest, all of the second half is exactly the same. Turnovers, penalties, missed tackles, and poor special teams play. Basically the same thing that has plagued us all season. Give Wisconsin credit, Illinois came out and scored on their first possession of the second half, and they stuck with it and just outplayed the Illini. Wisconsin lost its great TE Travis Beckem, and faced 3rd and 17, but they convert for a touchdown and that is pretty much all she wrote. So we are exactly where we were 2 weeks ago, so now we need to pray that the Illini can pull out 2 more games so we can all enjoy lovely Detroit, Michigan.

Funny Stuff

I want to start this by saying one thing. Kenan Thompson is not goddamn funny!! Why is he on television? I can't even compare him to anybody, because he is in his own class of unfunny! At least Gallahger had a niche, some people like seeing you hit shit with a sledge hammer. I feel like NBC thinks that Kenan is funny because he is Black and Fat, "all of the fat people we have had were funny, and the Black people we had were funny, so maybe we should combine them?" He should have stopped where it all started, with D2: The Mighty Ducks, and that goddamn knuckle puck! Really, a black kid from Compton invents a new way to hit a hockey puck? He was the first person to think, "I wonder what would happen if I put the puck on it's edge and then hit it?" If only we knew back then that we would still have to deal with this asshole, maybe we could have done something to stop it. You know who we should all blame, Emilio Estevez! Feel free to disagree with me, but know that it makes you a moron with a terrible sense of humor.

Anyways, the Weekend Updates on Thursdays have been really funny. Her is a youtube clip of a crazy lady at a McCain Rally, or as I like to call them McClan rallies, and then SNL making fun of her.

Also they had Will Ferrell back lastnight and it was great. Also how many guys do you know that would take Tina Fey over damn near any other hot chick on TV? Ahhh Liz Lemon we love you!

Here is the final clip I have. This is Daniel Tosh, I saw him live here in Chicago, and he is amazing. I highly recommend seeing him, or buying his CD. Not safe for work!

Weekend Picks

I never thought I would say this, but I love Wannie!! He is 2-0 for Durty Butter, it's about time that he payed off for us. The Illini looked really good in demolishing Indiana, however it was Indiana. Michigan State looked awful, and Wisconsin looked even worse. After watching LSU beat South Carolina, I bet a lot of Michigan fans wish that Les Miles had taken the open coaching job instead of Dick Rod. On a happy note for everyone that hates Michigan, recruits are bailing from the wolverines like investors are bailing from the stock market. So we finished last weekend at 3-2 which puts us at 13-12 for the season. Here are this weeks picks:

Friday Game:

Boise State (-7) @ San Jose State - Boise State is sitting pretty for another BCS game, and they are playing a 5-2 San Jose State. That record seems good except they lost to Nebraska by 23, and Stanford by 13. Boise State's only real good win so far is beating Oregon, but that happened @ Oregon which is a tough place to play. I don't see this as a hiccup for BSU since they have been here before. Going Undefeated means a probable BCS game, losing one game means the Humanitarian Bowl, which is coincidentally played in Boise. Do we want to go to the Orange or Sugar bowl, or do we wanna party at home in Boise? I used to live by Boise, trust me, they would take the Motor City Bowl over the Humanitarian Bowl. Also the payout for a BCS game is 17 million per school, the Blue Turf Bowl pays 750,000.

Illinois (-2.5) @ Wisconsin - There are a number of reasons not to pick this game for Illinois. They haven't stopped anyone rushing this year, and that used to be what Wisconsin did good. Illinois is such a streaky team, that you have no idea what you are gonna get from game to game. Can Wisconsin really go 0-5 in the Big Ten and lose 5 games in a row? Camp Randall is still one of the top 3 hardest places to play at in the Big Ten. A lose will pretty much break Wisconsin's back, but a win could propel them to an 8-4 record and actually a decent Bowl game, since they have a much easier end to the season than beginning. That being said, screw Wisconsin, Illinios will win and cover. Wisconsin has been outrushed in 3 of its 4 loses, shockingly Penn State only rushed for 106 yards. That is probably because they were too busy throwing deep and scoring.

Moving the ball hasn't been the problem for Illinois, it has been turnovers and penalties. Wisconsin still doesn't have a QB, and PJ Hill is not 100%, if Michigan can hold them to 4 FG's i'm not too worried about the Illini. Our D-Line is playing really well, and the safties are getting by. This would be a nice game to get a couple picks for Vontae and Donsay. Wisconsin wants to line up and smash the ball down your throat, Illinois' defensive problems have come from playing spread offenses, and not doing their assignments and missing one on one tackles. That doesn't happen against teams that use 2 reciever sets. Look for the Illini to play more man coverage in the secondary, allowing the linebackers to focus on the run game. Also Josh Brent and Corey Luiget are beasts inside at DT, this is a offense that plays to their strenghts.

Penn State (-2.5) @ OSU - I'm still not impressed by Ohio State's offense, everyone seems ready to annoint Terrell Pryor as the next great QB, but the best game he had was against Wisconsin when he was 13-19 for 144 yards. He has only thrown for over 100 yards 3 times and never over 150. He is also only averaging 50 yards a game rushing. THIS TEAM BROUGHT BACK 19 STARTERS FROM A TEAM THAT WENT TO THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!! They have looked average in 7 of their 8 games, while Penn State has looked great for all but a half of football. The defense shut down Javon Ringer last week, but everyone does that until he wears you down and breaks a couple of runs. Mighigan State couldn't pass so they stacked the box and actually played solid defense. The last time they played an offense that actually had weapons all over the field, USC handed them their ass. Penn State has only put up less than 45 points twice! That includes Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and Oregon State. Penn State's defense has more than enough to handle Terrell Pryor and Beanie Wells, and their offense is amazing.

Texas Tech (+1.5) @ Kansas - Kansas plays much better at home than they do on the road, but Texas Tech plays good everywhere. They had scare 2 weeks ago against Nebraska, but other than that, they have played great. When your QB has 2750 yards through 7 games you know you have a pretty good offense. Plus they have to go through the hell that is the top of the Big 12 in the next 3 weeks. Texas and Oklahoma State at home and then @ Oklahoma, I think that they have prepared all season long for this stretch and know they can't afford a let down against Kansas. So they are actually trying out a kicker who won a contest at halftime, who cares, be worried when they stop kicking all together and start going for it on 4th and going for 2. Kansas is putting up good numbers, but I don't think they have the talent to keep up with Pat Knight U.

Minnesota (+1) @ Purdue - Purdue used to have a good offense, but that has gone to crap, Minnesota had a huge win at Illinois and then a week off. I was impressed by how Minnesota made plays on defense when they had to, and Purdue is stopping Eric Decker and Adam Weber. Purdue made Jimmy Clausen look like (insert good white Notre Dame ex-QB Here). The wheels have fallen off the Purdue bus and they are all patiently waiting for the Joe Tiller era to be over. I also think that Minnesota is basically doing what Illinois did last year and that is fighting for respect. Being the talented Underdog that nobody knows about is the story of college football every year. Maybe it actually is Minnesota's year.
Real funny clip to pass along with Chase Daniels, this is why he loves Colt McCoy so much. This instantly put a smile on my face!!

Greatest Story Ever Told!!

I'm sure most of you have heard the story of George Brett crapping his pants. The story came out about a month ago, when someone found the video for it on the interweb. The video was taken down everywhere. So we at Durty Butter and our good friend Pac Man have spent countless hours searching for it and finally Pac Man came through. It does not have the video, but here is the audio. It actually is George Brett telling the story. Don't listen to this at work, because Brett goes into great detail! Enjoy!!!

The Bulls are going to Hell

The Bulls cut Revrand Roger Powell today, officially making them the lost souls of the NBA. You can have 15 people on you roster, and most people thought that the Bulls would have to make a decision between the Rev and Michael Ruffin. Instead the Bulls got down to 15 with both of them on the roster, and then promptly cut them both leaving them with 13 people. I think Paxson is making cap space to bring in Mark Madsen to ride the pine.

http://www.illinihq.com/news/mens_basketball/2008/10/23/powell_waived

Also Larry Hughes is out 6-8 weeks, increasing his career injury total to 2,278. Which contract do you like better: Larry Hughes 12.8 million this year, Kirk Hinrich 10 million this year, Luol Deng 9.3 million, Tyrus Thomas 3.75 million, or Kobe Bryant 21.2 million.

Bulls Preview

I hate to start this post this way, but I am pretty close to already hating this team!! Assuming that we play 10 people in our rotation, tell me what part of this team gives you any hope whatsoever, Besides 19 year old rookie Derrick Rose?

Guards
Derrick Rose
Kirk Hinrich
Ben Gordon
Larry Hughes

Forwards
Tyrus Thomas
Drew Gooden
Andres Nocioni
Luol Deng

Centers
Joakim Noah
Aaron Gray

The reason that the Bulls were good under Scott Skiles was because he made his players play defense and because of that they got easy points and kept games close. Last year this team totally gave up on Skiles and decided that they just wanted to shoot in order to get better contracts in the off-season. So they will probably play hard for Vinny Del for a while, but I feel that with first sign of adversity they will fold.

Let's start with the guards.

Kirk Hinrich brings nothing to the table. He averaged 11 points a game last year and shot 41% from the field. I still don't understand how people think he is a good defender. He is too slow to guard PG's and to small to guard SG's. How can you be short, slow, white, played college at Kansas, and you can't shoot? He has been unbearable to watch in the Preseason!! Whatever your predictions were for Rose's assist totals this year, take away 3 because Kirk can't hit an open jumper.

Derrick Rose is gonna need some time to develop into a great PG, he isn't gonna get a ton of assists because he doesn't have a big man inside, and all of the guards that he plays with are not spot up shooters. Kirk can't hit an open shot consistently, and Ben Gordon likes to take shots off the dribble, not spotting up. He will make people better, and he will get a few buckets driving to the hole each game, but he isn't gonna carry this team just yet.

Ben Gordon is gonna be the leading scorer on this team again, and that is not a good thing. He is not a consistent scorer, instead of being hot one game and having a off night the next, Ben has hot quarters and off quarters, so where does that leave the rest of the team? He needs his shots in order to get his points. Everyone else is gonna stand around and the offense will stagnate.

Larry Hughes is a combination of Kirk Hinrich and Ben Gordon, if you combine their bad qualities. He is the definition of a chucker. He averaged 12 points a game last year and shot 38%, and he is another person is considered to be a good defender, but with so many injuries he is 2 steps slower than he used to be. I can't hammer him too much, because he is a good person, but that doesn't win games. He is more streaky than Gordon, which up until Larry became a Bull, i didn't think was possible.

The Forwards

Luol Deng- Thank god he was a free agent last year, and not 2 years ago, because if we had to pay him 2 years ago, we would have New York Knicks/Isiah Thomas type problems. Luol did what all great players do going from their 2nd to 3rd year, which is become comfortable and develop a solid offensive skill that gives opponents problems. Unfortunately great players keep developing, while Deng has pretty much become one dimensional. We all love the curls in the lane, and his pull up jumper, but for all of you that think that he is gonna be a superstar and carry the load on this team, name one legit SF who can't shoot outside of 20 feet? He will always average between 14-18 points. Hell even Shawn Marion and the worst jump shot in NBA history that he employs have better range than Deng.

Tyrus Thomas is another version of Luol Deng, except he can jump higher and can't shoot outside of 10 feet. If you combine their skills, then you have a legit SF/PF who could one day be an all-star, instead you have a freak athlete who doesn't have anything else to offer other than a couple dunks a game.

Andres Nocioni could actually be most well rounded player on this team, and that is probably the most heartbreaking thing about the Bulls. Noch plays good defense, can actually hit a spot up three, penetrate and finish at the hole, and rebound. He will benefit the most with having D Rose at point. However he is still a little undersized to be an awesome SF.

Drew Gooden has great games, and then he has games where he disappears. He would be perfect for this team if he would post up more. He is the only person on this team with the size and ability to do it, yet he loves his jumpshot too much and barely ever will post up an undersized forward who is guarding him. If the Bulls run pick and roll with him and D Rose more, he could put up Carlos Boozer numbers eventually.

The Centers (if you actually want to call them that)

First off, by about game 15 you are gonna be so pissed about how teams just destroy us inside. I'm warning you right now.

Joakim Noah - I hated him on the Bulls about 2 seconds after he was drafted. Usually I can talk myself into a pick for at least a couple games, but what in gods green earth does he bring to the Bulls? Watching him trying to catch a pass is like watching a toddler try to shag fly balls. I want to keep track of how many times Rose drives the lane, has defenses collapse, and then throws a great pass to Noah, and then watch him flail at it as the ball goes out of bounds. He will get muscled inside not only in post defense, but also on rebounds. He might run the floor well, but do you really expect him to finish?

Aaron Gray - The only thing I like about Gray is the fact that he flexes while he runs. It is the single funniest thing in the NBA this year. Its like a Baywatch slow motion whenever he runs back down to play D. He actually has the skill set that we need inside, and the body. But having the skill set, and having the skill to do it in the NBA are completely different things. He just isn't an NBA starter, let alone someone who you expect to make a difference for your team.

So my prediction for this year is that the Bulls will finish 3rd in the Central and miss the playoffs again. What we need to hope for is another miracle and a top 3 pick this year, or hope that the NBA reduces the shot clock to 12 seconds and we just run the hell out of teams. Oh and John Paxson will be fired.

A little tidbit for Illini fans: Watch Tabo and tell me that he doesn't remind you of Brian Randle. We have been told about his potential. He can't shoot to save his life, but he keeps you waiting because he makes one great play a game. If he only fouled out every game, and got injured all the time, I would think that they are long lost brothers.

Durty Butter Updates

First and Foremost, We at Durty Butter would like to congratulate Roger Powell for making the Bulls 15 man roster this year! Way to go Roger, now hopefully he can get some playing time this year.

http://www.nba.com/bulls/roster/

And thank you Derrick Rose for hurting D-Will in the second game that the Bulls played against the Utah Jazz. He can't stop screwing over the Illini, even in the NBA. He better be an All-Star, because I don't think Chicago can handle another bust at Point Guard.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3654442

The Cubs extended Jim Hendry's contract for 4 more years, and I know that most people lay the blame on GM's when their teams season doesn't end the way they want it to, but he has put together a pretty good team. Plus this gives him a chance to clean up the mess that is the Kosuke Fukudome contract!!

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3653770

Todd McShay of ESPN has Vontae Davis as the second highest rated underclassmen in the Nation this year. This is great for Vontae, and pretty much means that he is gone after this season. It is an ESPN Insider article.

There is a really good webcast called "Talking Illini" with Boz and Mr. G
Go to www.talkzone.com and click on "talking illini" they talked to Kurt Kittner this week and also they prepped the Illini-Wisky game. These guys are really good, and you get a lot of solid info about the Illini Football team. The second hour has Kittner.

Weekend Picks

This weekend we are going to make the picks pretty short. First off, about last weekend, the Illini shit the bed, I'm pretty sure that we can all agree on that one. LSU is not that good, Florida is. Colorado was one stupid safety away from at least pushing for me. Penn State is the real deal, and will likely go the the National Championship. Wisconsin looks awful, and I mean awful, on offense and on defense. Michigan State did what everyone expected and ran all over Northwestern, and Northwestern did what everyone thought and came back down to Earth.

So last week we went 2-3

Overall we are 10-10

Here are the picks for this week:

Illinois (-17) vs. Indiana - I haven't jumped off the Illinois bandwagon yet, and unlike most fans I don't want Coach Locks fired as O.C. Illinois racked up over 500 yards of total offense again and moved the ball at will. Turnovers and a few breakdowns blocking lost that game. Out of seven offensive drives in the first half, we could have come away with points on 5 of them. Hopefully the Illini are a little embarrassed and come out and destroy Indiana early. Also if they do get up, don't expect Juice to come out early since Fast Eddie McGee got into a little trouble this week.

Michigan State (+4) vs. Ohio State - Ohio State's offense is a work in progress, and the only real good win they have is against Wisconsin, two weeks later it looks like they underachieved in that game. They just scored 16 points at home against Purdue. I think this will be a game with ball control and field position as a major factor. I think Michigan State will actually pull this game out.

Wisconsin (+4) @ Iowa - Wisconsin is bad, but they aren't this bad. They have a good enough defense to keep Stephon Green in check long enough to score some points against Iowa. A QB change for them might jump start a one-dimensional offense, who lately sucks at there one-dimension also. Let's not read too much into Iowa blowing out Indiana, it was Indiana.

LSU (-3.5) @ South Carolina - I agree that Ol' Ball Coach will have his Game Cocks fired up for this game, but here is a question for you. Who would you rather have as your coach in this game, Les Miles of Steve Spurrier? Ten years ago, you answer Steve Spurrier, but right now, I think you have to go Les Miles in a close game right? He is not afraid to fake a punt or field goal, go for it on 4th and 3, or run some crazy gimmick play that somehow always works. LSU is fighting to keep title hopes alive here.

Pitt (-3) @ Navy - I have given up on Auburn this year, made a stupid pick taking Colorado because my cousin goes to school there, I even tried betting against Notre Dame, because A) it worked so well for me last year, and B) Notre Dame fans are the most delusional fans out there, and will push lines to ridiculous levels, but for the most part they are covering games they shouldn't and losing easy covers. So in all this, you know who actually panned out for me? WANNIE! That's right, Dave Wannstedt and his John Holmes mustache have done me well so far. So I am gonna ride this horse till it bucks me off, or until he's "got a knee".

Although I will say this about Notre Dame, there was no safer feeling in the world as when you were covering a spread against Notre Dame and Jimmy Clausen had the ball late in the game and was driving to beat you. That interception was the safest bet in football. Now it is a 50-50 chance, which is still pretty good.

Illini Hoops Preview

This last weekend, after the Illini Football team shocked us all back into sobriety, the Illini Men's Basketball team held the world's largest basketball practice at Assembly Hall. Here is the link to some of the action.

http://illinihq.com/video/view/1097/

In the offseason everyone was looking forward to this season because of how terrible our season was last year. However most people lost their anticipation once Jamar Smith decided that booze was more important than basketball. To be honest I felt the same way in college, but the difference was that I worked at a BAR, I wasn't playing for a basketball team that was in the top 10 in wins in the nation since 2000. So what can you expect from this years illini team? Well here is Mark Tupper's article from Illini Media Day.

http://www.herald-review.com/blogs/marktupper/?p=524

After reading that article, here is why I think that the Illini will win 20 games and probably miss out on the NCAA tournament, but at least be on the right path to get back to where we used to be:

Brian Randle and Shaun Pruitt are gone: Thank God!! Pruitt was so selfish it was amazing. When you have your senior leader suspended for a game because of his attitude and for yelling at other players on the team, then you know the kid is a cancer. Who exactly did Shaun think he was? Here is why Shaun was good, because he got to play a season with 3 of the best guards that Illinios has ever had, and 2 years with Dee Brown and James Augustine. When you are the 3rd or 4th option on offense and don't get double teamed in the post, then you can probably hit 5 shots a game, which is pretty much what Shaun did. He did not improve at all for 3 years. Maybe if Shaun could shoot 60% from the free throw line and pass out of a triple team then we might have at least made a post season tournament.

Brian Randle was constantly hurt, but when he was healthy here is what he did. Dunk twice a game, catch the ball in a motion offense mind you, and not dribble it, hold it for 4 seconds, then pas it after the defense has caught up with everyone. Then he would pick up 2 early fouls and sit for the last 14 minutes of the first half, then start the second half with a foul, put his head down and walk to the bench to sit for another 10 minutes. Maybe he should have had surgery to shorten his arms so he wouldn't reach so damn much! Not to mention every year we heard rumors(not actually rumors since we all know the source) that he wanted to transfer, or quit playing all together. There were actually only 11 games where Brian played over 30 minutes, and 9 games where he fouled out. He couldn't shoot or defend, and anyone that tells me that Randle was one of the best defenders on the illini is stupid or European.

So the question is, if these are the only 2 people you lose from last year(along with Alexander, who wasn't much of a SF), can you replace them? The answer is yes. Tisdale will give up size inside, but he is getting bigger, and he won't clog the middle because he can actually shoot from outside. Oh and he is not a blackhole inside. We might actually have guards penetrate this year and have open shots because 5 people will be moving and screening instead of 3. Bill Cole, Mike Davis, Dominique Keller (yes I haven't seen him play) and even Rich Semrau for 5 minutes are upgrades from Brian Randle. Cole and Davis have what you want from a PF in the motion, a jump shot! Keller is apparently a scorer, something Brian wasn't, and Semrau has what Brian had for 5 years, potential. So basically you will get much more scoring, and a more fluid offense, and give up some rebounds. To replace Alexander you still have Brock, who played over him much of the season anyway.

Backcourt is all back: Demitri McCamey is the point guard that we all hoped he could be. When our last shot to make the NCAA's was to win the Big Ten Tourney, McCamey stepped up and carried the team. He just ran out of gas in the last game against a great defensive team after playing his 4th game in 4 days. Bruce rode him really hard, and he finally showed signs of what he can be, and it helps to have Deron Williams as your role model. Trent Meacham can shoot and Chester Frazier can defend and rebound. Jeff Jordan got some good experience last year, he is competitive as hell, and very athletic. We still have Calvin Brock who is an athletic freak, actually can shoot mid-range jumpers, and defends really well. Enter into all of this, the highest rated high school player we have had since Dee Brown, and you have a decent backcourt. I know we haven't seen Alex Legion play with the Illini yet, but you don't have too many McDonalds All-Americans who are busts, unless they go to Duke. Plus he has been practicing with the team since December, instead of just off-season workouts, and the month you get to hold practices before the season starts.

Team looking for Redemption: To say that Illinois gave games away last year is a complete understatement. Out of 19 losses last year the Illini could have won in 11 of them. I know that it is stupid to look back and say that they "could" have won, but look below. I think we all know how horrible we were free throw shooting last year, but look at these games.

Maryland- down 60-62 1:00 left - FT 4-9

Arizona - up 61-59 :27 left - FT 10-22 Lost in overtime

Miami (OH) - tied 52-52 :31 left - FT 16-26 Lost in overtime

Tennessee State - down 58-59 :09 left - FT 12-22

Penn State - down 64-65 :10 left - FT 8-14

Indiana - down 58-60 :05 left - FT 13-21

Purdue - down 57-60 3:00 left - FT 10-21

Ohio State - down 55-59 1:52 left - FT 7-10 (pruitt suspended)

Indiana - up 63-60 :40 left - FT 8-17 Lost in overtime

Penn State - up 51-50 :19 left - FT 5-10

Michigan - down 43-46 1:00 left - FT 5-9

This is not talking about if this shot would have fallen, or if that guy hadn't made a miracle banked in three(Gordon) then we would have won, these are free throws. I feel that with this young team losing so many close heart-breaking games they should be looking for a little payback this year. Hopefully we move better on offense, and get to the line more with better penetration.

Easier Non-conference schedule: Last year we started @ Hawaii, which ask Michigan State, it is a tough game, then we played Oklahoma State, Duke, @Maryland, Arizona, Miami (OH), and Mizzou. This year we have Vanderbilt, Clemson @ home, Georgia @ the United Center, Kent State, Texas A&M, and Mizzou. Although Vandy, Clemson, Kent State, Georgia, and Texas A&M made the tourney last year, this year Rivals has them ranked the following: Clemson (35), Texas A&M (44), Kent State (53), Vandy (55), Mizzou (60) and Georgia not in top 64. For the record, neither are we, but at least it is better than last years schedule. Hopefully with this line-up, we can get off to a better start than we did last year, and build confidence.

Still play home games at Assembly Hall: Assembly Hall is still one of the toughest places to play at, not only in the Big Ten, but the entire nation, so hopefully this year we can get back to winning at home, and recreate the last 9 years of dominance that we had there.

So after all of this do I think we are a tournament team? No, but I do see us competing a lot better than we did last year, actually have some wins in close games, and maybe hit a clutch free throw or two.

Dee Brown

Dee started today for the Washington Wizards. His line:

31 minutes. 3-6 shooting for 6 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 1 steal, 3 TO's

The Wizards next game is on Friday which is also the day that Deron Williams and Roger Powell return to Assembly Hall for the showdown between the Jazz and the Bulls. Roger will be playing tonight at 7:30, hopefully he gets some minutes, since he hasn't played in the last game.
Update: Roger Powell did not play in Chicago's loss lastnight.

Also check out Dee's website, he keeps a running journal about his life.

Everything is Cool With Fast Eddie

Apparently Eddie McGee will not face charges for his incident in Champaign Saturday night. He will get diversion instead. I wish that I could have actually seen the fight because according to this report it would have been pretty funny.

http://www.illinihq.com/news/football/2008/10/14/backup_ui_quarterback_will_be_offered_diversion_in_incident

For the record Fast Eddie is 6-4, 200 Ilbs.

Some of the best responses that were heard by Durty Butter today:

"Eddie was just dancing with her, and then fumbled her."
"Maybe She was from Minnesota."
"I wonder if "The Journey" was filming there."
"Can't blame Eddie, he just has bad hands."
"At least it wasn't the ball that he constantly drops."
"Eddie is just tired of not "getting in"."
"After Juice's 4Q fumble and interception he was trying to regain his throne as the Illini's premiere choke artist."
"It is good to hear he worked on his stiff arm this offseason."

When this was first reported this morning, I couldn't help but look back on the last few weeks of being a sports fan and this is what I came up with.

Illini lose Jamar Smith!
Cubs get swept in the NLDS!
Illini Lose to Minnesota on homecoming!
Bears Lose on an 11 second Field Goal Drive!
Eddie McGee Choke slams a chick!

And in a moment of rage and sadness this is the pessimistic view I had for the next few weeks, along with help from some friends:

-Juice Williams breaks his leg and throwing arm on the same play
-Bears Defense comes down with dysentery
-Demitri McCamey shoots Jerrence Howard during a fight over a Snickers bar. All future recruits decommit.
-Ron Zook quits, Illini hire John Shoop
-Bruce Weber quits, Illini hire Bill Walton
-Al Davis buys the Bears
-Bulls give Derrick Rose a motorcycle
-Bob Howry wins the closer's job next year. By "win," I mean Wood and Marmol are on the DL.
-Arrelious Benn leaves school early, runs a 4.96 40 at the combine, gets passed on by the Bears in the draft for "being too slow," goes to the Rams, leads the Rams to a Super Bowl. Hillbillies seen wearing Benn jerseys at the Border Wars game.

Feel free to add to either of these lists in the comments sections

Fast Eddie McGee might be in trouble

It hasn't been reported that this is actually the Illini Back-up QB, but here is a police blotter from over the weekend by the Division of Public Safety of U of I.

http://www.dps.uiuc.edu/crimereports.aspx

In it is this blurb:

Edward F. McGee, 20, Savoy, arrested on charges of aggravated battery at the African-American Homecoming Dance at CRCE, 1102 W. Gregory Dr., U., around midnight Oct. 12. During an altercation, McGee is accused of grabbing the throat and throwing down a female victim on the dance floor.

Heres hoping that there are 2 Edward F McGees that are 20 and live in Savoy that were at that party on Saturday night.

Weekend Picks

So I was expecting Auburn's offense to finally come around, apparently I have more patience than Auburn Head Coach Tommy Tuberville who fired his offensive coordinator this week. Obviously I wasn't the only person losing money because Auburn couldn't cover a spread... or run one. On a side note, if you knew nothing about college football and I showed you the 2 pictures above, which one would you think is Tommy Tuberville?
Exactly, the guy with the front butt.

While watching the Illini-Michigan game, I thought that either Rich Rod's head was going to explode, or his pants were going to get soiled based on his facial expressions. I have always hated Michigan, but he has taken my hatred to another level. I am waiting for defenses to catch up to spread offenses and "The guru of the spread" to become obsolete. This will happen in the next 3-4 years as schools recruit faster, yet undersized LB's and DE's who have more lateral speed than normal. This always occurs, in the 80's you had more of a power I, and triple option offenses, then the 90's brought pro style offenses, and then that morphed into more of a single back with 3-4 WR sets, and now the spread with dual threat QB's. I feel that things will move back to a more smash-mouth style, or maybe the A-11.

So for the Season Durty Butter is 8-7, which I chalk up to a horrible week of upsets 2 weeks ago. Without that week, we are 7-3. Take out Auburn and we are 7-1.

The picks for this week are:

Illini (-13) vs. Minnesota - If Minnesota weren't 5-1 then I would probably take them and the points in this game, which I know this is crazy logic, but let me explain. Minnesota sucks! They have a decent QB and a great WR and that is it. Their 5 wins have been against JV opponents. They have beaten Northern Illinois, Bowling Green, Montana State, Florida Atlantic, and Indiana, and only one of those games was on the road. They lost to Ohio State by 13, but were down 34-6 with 10 minutes left(screwed me on the spread), it was Pryor's second game as a starter and Wells' first game in a month. However, since Minnesota is 5-1 and could become bowl eligible with a win, the Illini probably are giving them more credit than they deserve. It could have been a game that Illinios overlooked and came out and gone through the motions. It's homecoming, you just beat Michigan at the Big House, but look for the Illini to keep the momentum going. Also look for the secondary to get some turnovers. This is the challenge that Vontae has been looking for to make him a legit first-round pick, and the safety situation is finally figured out. Donsay will have an amazing hit in this game.

The logic that Minnesota will come out fired up because Tim Brewster is pissed at Illinios for being passed up for the Head Coaching job and want revenge is stupid. Do you really think that players are thinking "We need to win this for coach because we were his second choice!"?

Michigan State (-1.5) @ Northwestern - Javon Ringer is a stud, he is 12 yards short of 1000 in 6 games, and Brian Hoyer is actually completing passes. The defense didn't stop Stephon Green last week against Iowa, but they did keep him out of the end zone. This will be a good gauge as to how good MSU's defense is, because 5 of the next 6 games are against spread offenses. Northwestern, just like Minnesota hasn't beaten a decent team unless you are talking about Basketball programs. Northwestern has had a week off, but I can't imagine them going 6-0, it's probably because I didn't get into school there and I am still bitter! Plus playing at Ryan Field isn't exactly a home field advantage, and doesn't deserve the points that you get against the spread when you are home.

LSU (+6) @ Florida - This pick is based on one things. Percy Harvin is not healthy. If he doesn't play, then I think that LSU wins this game, but even if he does play, he is not going to be 100% and that changes the entire scheme for Florida's offense. He is the leading receiver and 2nd leading rusher for an offense that has not played the way people thought. LSU's defense isn't as good as it has been in the past, but with Florida's problems, expect a close game in the 20's

Colorado (+14) @ Kansas - Kansas is not the same team they were a year ago. They lost to USF and barely squeaked out a win at Iowa State last week. They also are playing Oklahoma and Texas Tech in the next 2 weeks, so they might not come out and play well enough to win by more than 2 touchdowns, because they have been giving up points this year. Colorado is a young offense that was playing very well until they ran into Florida State and Texas. I expect them to play well but still lose, just not by alot. Plus my cousin goes to Colorado, so I will like them until the Illini play them in a Bowl game or the NCAA Tournament, at which point we will sever all ties.

Penn State (-6) @ Wisconsin - Wisconsin is one dimensional offense, and Penn State has a great front 4 now that all of their players are out of county lock-up. They do have a good defense, but they gave up yards to Steven Threet and Tyrel Pryor who are both duel threat QBs. Penn State's offense is much better than both Michigan and Ohio State, because they have great players at all of the skill positions. If Wisconsin does not start throwing the ball better look for them to get blown out in this game. The only thing that scares me with this pick is that it is very hard to believe that Wisconsin will lose 3 games in a row, and Camp Randall is a terrible place to play for a road team.

As always some of these games are a little too close to really call, so tease them. Illini -7, MSU +5.5, LSU +12, Colorado +20, Penn State pick'em. For the record Auburn is a 17 point favorite against Arkansas, so since I didn't pick them this week, they will cover.

Illini Updates

Roger Powell got a few minutes for the Bulls last night, 8 to be exact. He didn't show too much last night, shooting short on his 2 3-point attempts, and also getting dunked on by Gerald Green, but hopefully he relaxes in his next few games. His Line:

8 Mins, 2 points, 2 rebs, 1 block, 2 turnovers.

After the debacle that was the 2008 MLB postseason for Chicago, we at Durty Butter were in search for something to cheer us up. It came in the form of a text message from a friend. Durty Butter Updates

God Bless Bruce Weber, Jerrance Howard and the Illini Basketball coaching staff. For 2 years now, people have been bitching about how Bruce and Co. have been getting there ass handed to them when it comes to recruiting. Well they have put together 2 unbelievable classes for 2009 and 2010, and hopefully after this weekend the future will look even brighter.

Dee Brown and the Washington Wizards won lastnight. Dee's line:

7 points, 6 rebs, 4 assists, 3 steals, 1 block, 1 TO in 25 minutes.

News of the Day

The cubs will have Rich Harden next year. I hope that the 7 million they are paying him is the same 7 million that Kosuke Fukudome is donating to the cubs for being god awful! Wishful thinking.

Ball State Receiver leaving rehab. This is great, because the hit that this kid took was one of the worst I have ever seen. It is really amazing the strides that have been made in spinal cord injuries the past few years. It doesn't mention if he is walking, but after his surgery he was able to move his arms and legs.

Illini News

With the start of the NBA Preseason, we are looking forward to not only another great year from established former Illini Deron Williams, and Luther Head, but also couple of Illini who are trying to make NBA Rosters.

Dee Brown has signed with the Washington Wizards, and with Agent Zero being injured for the start of the season, it looks like he will get some playing time. In his first pre-season game last night Dee's line was: 3-8 for 6 points, 3 reb, 4 assists, and 3 steals in 26 minutes.

Roger Powell is in camp with our beloved Bulls. Their first game is Thursday night. Check back with Durty Butter for updates.

Illini Football: After starting out a little sluggish, the Illini outscored Michigan 42-6 to finish off Michigan and Dick Rod. Juice Williams had 430 yards and 4 touchdowns (2 passing, 2 rushing). While Juice was not as accurate as most people would like, his passing was probably the best that we at Durty Butter have seen from him. Here are a few keys to look for in future games.

1) Juice threw the ball away at least 5 times. In the past, Juice would have tried to force passes into covered receivers and possibly throw INT's, in this game, or would have taken off running. Teams know what Juice can do with his legs, so when he gets out of the pocket, you will see someone spying him, so instead of taking a pounding for minimal yards, Juice is getting rid of the ball.

2) Juice is going through his progressions. The play before Dufrene's touchdown catch, Juice looked off the safety with Cumberland running a post and threw down the sideline to Jason Ford, which Ford could not haul in. On Dufrene's touchdown, the play was actually a double screen, but instead of throwing to AJ Jenkins on the right, Juice hit Dufrene out of the backfield. He is also being much more patient waiting for Rejus to come free on crossing routes.

3) Rejus in the Backfield. Illinois instead of running straight option with Rejus in the backfield, they threw to him early. This matched him up on a linebacker, and a safety had to come over and make the tackle. Look for the Illini to run play-action with Rejus in the backfield and to throw to him more out of the backfield.

4) D-Line and secondary are getting better. Having a healthy D-line and Secondary are finally starting to show, with the Illini planting Michigan's QB a number of times. Add to this Britt Miller blitzing well and things should pick up on defense.

5) Daniel Dufrene has stepped up. Through 5 games this year Dufrene has 74 carries for 442 yards rushing and 140 yards receiving. A year ago through 5 games Rashard Mendenhall had 95 carries for 612 yards and 140 yards receiving. Those numbers include 214 yards against Indiana. Daniel has yet to face some of the weaker run defenses in the Big Ten. He has shown that he has big play capability running and receiving and also can pick up blitzers in the backfield.

With the offense picking up steam, here is a scary thought: Will Judson is the only skill position player that graduates this year! We do lose 3 lineman this year however, yet Zook and Co. have done a good job recruiting the last 2 years at OL.

This weekend is going to be a big test for the Illini defense, especially the secondary. Since the Illini mainly run zone coverages, you are not going to see Vontae Davis matched up with Eric Decker all day long, but in order to keep Decker who is the leading receiver in college football in check, the secondary will have to play well, and the d-line will have to continue to get pressure. Offensively look for the illini running backs to have a better day than they did in Michigan, and lots of play-action passing.

Durty Butter Prediction: Illini 38 Minnesota 24
