I have had numerous conversations about ESPN's rankings for high school basketball and football with many people. My contention is that ESPN is pretty much a joke as far as doing any research what so ever. If you want proof, watch the NFL draft after the first 45 picks. McShay and Kiper know every player, but the other 17 people that ESPN puts in front of the camera don't know a damn thing.
I say this because on signing day they had Illinois in their top 25 classes even though 3 of the players they listed for Illinois did not commit. It took them over a week after signing day to update things.
So a couple of months ago I came across a really funny story on an Illinois message board about a high school football player in Chicago. The kid named Earlzo Singleton was being touted by somebody as one of the best players in Chicago. He claimed to have offers, and coaches coming to visit him. Well all of that was bullshit. Here is the article from the Sun-Times by Taylor Bell about the kid. Make sure you read the comments after the article, because that is the best part.
Anyway, ESPN with all of their wisdom has listed Earlzo to their ESPN Top 150 watch list. Basically ESPN bought into the crap that this kid and his handlers were selling. Just another reason not to believe everything you read from ESPN.
