Durty Butter NFL Update

There has been a lot of things that have happened since the last time we have posted here on Durty Butter, so we are going to touch on a lot of subjects. This is the NFL update which will be heavy on the Bears and the NFC North.

First I was in England last week and I was praying that Brett Favre would choose to return during my vacation. Is there anything more disgusting than the spectacle that is Brett Favre? ESPN is losing a lot of fans and viewers because of their constant molesting of Favre's ego. I personally have decided to use SI.com now because I can't take this shit anymore. I was so happy this morning when Plaxico Buress decided to go to prison for being an idiot because it gave ESPN something else to talk about. However I'm sure there will be a 3-hour special tonight to get Brett's reaction to Buress.

So my brother-in-law is a huge Vikings fan, so now he is absolutely in love with Favre and this signing. In his defense I would be too when T-Jack was my only other option at QB. For those of you who think that this is a good signing, or are worrying about the Vikings now in the North I implore you to look at how Favre destroyed the Jets last year. Here is why Favre will also crush the Vikings:

1) Favre again did not go to training camp. So he is learning his 3rd system in 3 years, with only 3 weeks to do it.

2) He had surgery on his arm in the off-season and a month ago told everyone that he couldn't play at his 17th crying retirement press conference.

3) His teammates hated him last year because he didn't go to camp, held the organization hostage in the off season, and he made no effort to get to know the other players around him. He will do the exact same thing this season.

4) He is 39 year old QB who in his prime was known for moving around, improvising, and being a gun slinger. Now he can't run, and he can't throw as hard. Good luck. On ESPN they mentioned how the Vikings coach said that he launched a ball 60 yards. Congrats Brett, you can now throw the ball as far as any high school QB in the country. Kyle Boller threw a football 60 yards through the goal posts from one knee, and where is he now?

5) He threw 10 INT's in his last 6 games last year losing 4 of those games. 2 years ago he threw 7 in his last 5 games not to mention the implosion he had in the playoffs against the Giants. Now he is a year older.

6) He is going back to a conference that knows him. You could argue that this will help him, but at 39 with only his left arm intact, he can't make the same throws or the same plays that he used to. Do you really think that the Packers aren't going to be jacked about trying to end his career? I think Vince Lombardi might rise from his grave to give the pre-game pep talk for that one.

7) He threw 22 interceptions last year, and Adrian Peterson led the league in fumbles. That does not instill a lot of confidence.

8) Everyone in the sporting world is tired of him, and at the first sign of rust or weakness, everyone will turn on him. Favre has been the golden boy of the NFL. John Madden would divorce his wife if Brett Favre would take him, but how is he gonna react when everyone loses their faith in him?

Okay enough of that shit. On to the Bears.

I am going on record right now and saying that I don't like the Jay Cutler pick-up. Yes he is better than Kyle Orton, but this was a guy who couldn't handle the Denver media, how the hell is he going to handle Chicago. He has a great arm, but really doesn't have anyone to throw to, and he is already pissing off his teammates. The Bears are run by one thing: Brian Urlacher and the Bears' defense. Rex Grossman understood this, and he kept his mouth shut, took the blame and still took the Bears to a Superbowl. Do you think if Cutler had the revolving door known as Fred Miller at tackle and Curtis Benson as his running back as his running back that he would keep his mouth shut? He already bitched out by blaming Devin Hester for his interception last week.... IN A PRE-SEASON GAME!! I am praying that the Bears get off to a good start so that fans and the media don't get on Culter, otherwise you are going to see Jay downing Mountain Dew's like Klye Farnsworth drinking Bud Lights so that he can go into a diabetic coma. Now that I have dispensed with that, allow me to talk about the things I like about the Bears.

1) For the first time in 3 years I actually like our offensive line. Kreutz, Garza and Williams make for a great right side of the line, and if we can get 8 games out of Orlando Pace I will be happy. I know Pace is 75 years old, but he is the best tackle we have had in 4 years, ask Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton.

2) Matt Forte is the complete back that we have been looking for since Walter Payton. I am not comparing him to Walter Payton, I am saying he is the best back we have had since him. I like him better than Thomas Jones just because he is a little more elusive and faster.

3) I am anxious to see if the Bears can stay somewhat healthy on defense. If they can, then they will be solid again. The defensive line should be improved by have Dusty Dvoracek back and Pisa Tinoisamoa was a great pick-up in the off season. The secondary is a little suspect with McBride at one corner, but at least now we all don't have to wait for the second quarter of the first game for Mike Brown to crush our hopes with an injury. The key to this season as always will be whether or not Tommie Harris can play so that lineman and fullbacks can't block Urlacher and Briggs.

4) Greg Olsen is poised to have a spectacular season if all goes well. Also Earl Bennett benefits the most from the Culter pickup since they played in college together, and don't sleep on Enrique Iglesias' little brother Juaquin at receiver. He was solid last year for Oklahoma. I for one am hoping that for his touchdown celebration he puts on an unbuttoned t-shirt and stares longingly into the camera like the Escape Video by Enrique.

Here is my prediction for the Bears this season:

@ Green Bay - L
Pittsburgh - L
@ Seattle - W
Detroit - W
@ Atlanta -L
@ Cincinnati - W
Cleveland - W
Arizona - W
@ San Francisco - W
Philadelphia - W
@ Minnesota - L
St. Louis - W
Green Bay - W
@ Baltimore - L
Minnesota - W
@ Detroit - W

I think the Bears will end up 11-5 and win the NFC North. The only question marks are really Green Bay and Arizona. Losing the Superbowl does not bode well for teams, and Green Bay is switching defenses, so I'm not sure how they will look early in the season. Stay tuned for a baseball post and thankfully an Illini Football post.
